A third-generation company
The Klein Agency was started in the 1960s by Earl Klein. For over 20 years the Earl A. Klein Agency was a general agency that had a sterling reputation of integrity, diligence, and intellect – which has always been a common thread to our current ownership structure. In 1982, Earl’s twin sons – Richard and Michael – had the vision to create their legacy as agent owners when they shifted the focus to assist design professionals. By generating a specialty insurance program with Fireman’s Fund, the agency become the Mid-Atlantic’s go-to broker for Land Surveyors, Civil Engineers, and Landscape Architects.
The firm continued to grow, becoming the Klein Agency in 2006 when an ailing Michael encouraged his young nephew, Justin, to run the agency. Justin leveraged the family’s long-time working relationship with HMS Insurance Agency, acquiring the capital to transition and scale the business to support all design professionals. Later that same year, Justin’s vision for growth was realized when the first office outside of Maryland opened in Philadelphia and it has since expanded further with an office in Virginia Beach. Ten years later, recognizing an opportunity to harness the power of another joint effort, Nexus Professional Risk was formed.
Too big to be small and too small to be big.
That was our dilemma at our respective agencies (Klein Agency & IMCI) when the idea for Nexus first sparked in 2016. We had challenges that we knew scale could solve, but we also weren’t ready to give up our identities and commitment to client relationships by joining one of the insurance bohemyths.
We saw a lack of succession planning solutions — the aging insurance broker market was being forced to sell out to larger agencies; the blood, sweat, and tears of brand building gone with the stroke of a check. We recognized the transactional nature of many insurance agencies while witnessing a strong desire for specialization and education from our clients.
So we created Nexus.
An alternative, relationship-driven way to grow.
A way to have access to more resources while maintaining a high-touch client experience. A way to be surrounded by like-minded professionals eager to learn and share knowledge. A way to obtain leadership and exponentially grow intellectual capital. A way to gain new carrier relationships and more risk management opportunities for our clients. A way to blend autonomy and growth.
